Toba: The Heart Home

Toba: The Heart Home

Toba Inlet is the glacier blue artery punching into the heart of the Toba River Valley and its mountainous flanks to access the mainland body of Klahoose traditional territory. Toba: The Heart Home by Rochelle Baker | Deep Roots Island Waves http://rest.s3for.me/deep-roots/12+Toba+the+Hearthome+mp3+Master.mp3 An entity in and of itself, Toba resources were, and continue to be, vital to Klahoose survival, culture and economic well-being. The notion place can have affect on those that reside there is ancient and widespread in human history. The Toba has shaped and has been shaped by the Klahoose, and the settlers, homesteaders and loggers who followed. The story of Toba: The Heart Home is how living in his people’s traditional territory profoundly shaped a young boy. And, how that experience built a foundation of resilience, and forged an inspirational bond with an ancestor, both of which he’d draw upon to surmount challenges later in life.  Rochelle Baker, reformed newspaper reporter and former urban princess, recently moved to the Discovery Islands to try and recapture the enchantment of her childhood summers on Cortes Island. The sound of the radio was a permanent feature in her home growing up, and remains so today. Working with the Deep Roots collective and learning from the Klahoose Nation was a step in fulfilling a long-time dream of sharing the magic of stories over the airwaves and as a window into people’s lives....
Quadra Island Studio Tour: June 2-3, 2018

Quadra Island Studio Tour: June 2-3, 2018

There is nothing quite as magical as getting a glimpse of an artist at work in their studio. It is an experience that cannot be replicated - for so many artists, their studios are an extension of their soul. Every year for the past 16 years the artists on Quadra Island have opened up their studios to the public on the first weekend in June for the Quadra Island Studio Tour.  Quadra Island Studio Tour by Rochelle Baker http://rest.s3for.me/discovery-sound/2018+CKTZ+Quadra+Studio+Tour.mp3 For these two exciting days you can explore the amazing creative forces this community has to offer. There is a huge range of work to take in. Gary Colter makes the most incredibly intricate jewelry from recycled watches and fossils. Gordon James will wow you with both his gorgeous prints, and the amazing pottery he makes with his wife Martha. Maureen Maryka paints such vibrant images of the West Coast that they just about explode off the canvas! Tracy Myerson will captivate you with the stunning colors and patterns in her fused glass pieces. And Terry Phillips uses textiles the way most artists use a brush and canvas - her quilts are spectacular works of art. These are but a few of the many talented artists on this year’s tour! There is so much to see and learn, you’ll probably have to come back! Many of the artists studios are open year round, here is your first chance to meet the artists and see them in their environment. See what inspires them, chat with them and learn what they do, and maybe a piece will speak to your heart and call your...
Tune in to CKTZ for the Sounds of Seafest

Tune in to CKTZ for the Sounds of Seafest

The Cortes Island Seafest was the place to be this past May long weekend. Hundreds of locals and visitors to the island – as well as a huge volunteer corps – turned out for the popular annual Victoria Day event, ensuring it was as successful as ever. Cortes Radio was there to capture the Sounds of Seafest as people enjoyed the food, music and wares ideally located at Gorge Harbour Marina. Tune in to CKTZ for the Sounds of Seafest Rochelle Baker / CKTZ http://rest.s3for.me/discovery-sound/CKTZ+2018+Sounds+of+Seafest.mp3 Sounds Of Seafest Ever growing in popularity since its 1995 inception, the festival was created by the Cortes Island Seafood Association (CISA) to celebrate the community’s connection to our surrounding waters. A non-profit society, CISA mandate is to monitor the water quality surrounding Cortes Island. Hosted by those who make a sustainable living from the ocean, Seafest is a meant to be a celebration with the wider community. It’s also an opportunity to promote a mutual understanding and appreciation of the work within the sector, and celebrate the bounty of the ocean. Not to mention, it’s an ideal way to sample the gourmet offerings the industry provides. Tastes Of Seafest Hundreds of people lined up to sample a range of tasty, fresh-cooked oysters prepared in a myriad of ways by dedicated volunteers working their magic on camp stoves. They were only outdone by an industrious crew, shucking oysters at a frenetic rate to keep pace with demand. As usual, Seafest was an ideal way to launch the summer season and connect with friends, family and community. All photos by Rochelle Baker  ...
Cortes Radio Kooky Cabaret A Hit!

Cortes Radio Kooky Cabaret A Hit!

Well it’s official. Cortes Radio’s Cabaret Fundraiser is well on its way to becoming an island institution, as are many of the standout performers in the show. Two Sold-Out-Nights Residents turned out in force in force to support CKTZ, attending the two-night sold-out show – a saucy, ribald production held at Manson’s Hall. The adult entertainment featured songs, monologues, stand-up, lip sync, puppetry and burlesque infused with “appropriately inappropriate” sex positive humour. CKTZ station manger and show producer Howie Roman was blown away by the support and commitment from CKTZ supporters, performers and volunteers.  Unique Reflection Of Cortes Community The event was a special and unique reflection of the Cortes community, Howie said. “We really have something going that I don’t think you’d find in many places,” he added. “Thank you all for a historic weekend.”       Thank-you Everyone CKTZ wants to give an official and heartfelt shout-out to all the sponsors, entertainers, volunteers and supporters that made the Cortes Radio Cabaret such a success. We hope everybody is named, but there are so many generous souls. Please forgive us and inform us if you were forgotten, or your name is misspelled. We will make it right. Sponsors and Supporters: Quadra Island’s Tru Value Foods, and by extension, the store’s thoughtful shoppers, who generously bequeath their spirit points to us.
