This week’s Podcast Martinho da Vila (born February 12, 1938) is a Brazilian singer and composer who is considered to be one of the main representatives of samba and MPB. He is a prolific songwriter, with hundreds of recorded songs across over 40 solo albums. He also has many songs that were recorded by singers from different musical genres. Internationally celebrated artists such as Nana Mouskouri (Greece), Ornella Vanoni (Italy), Katia Guerreiro (Portugal), Rosario Flores (Spain) have put their voices to Martinho’s songs and lyrics. As a singer, he is considered by critics as one of the top exponents of samba to have ever lived. Tito Paris, (born Aristides Paris May 30, 1963 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde) is a singer and musician (mainly playing guitar and bass). He has a long career behind him, not only as a musician/performer, but also as a song writer. Tito Paris moved as a young man, aged 19, to Portugal and he developed his career from Lisbon. Episode 168 - Vinho do Porto Buraka Som Sistema was an electronic dance music project from Portugal, specializing in a fusion of techno beats with the African zouk and kuduro genre. It is generally credited with creating the “zouk bass” and “progressive kuduro” variant and has received an MTV European Music Award. In 2015 Buraka Som Sistema said they would be taking an hiatus starting in 2016, and on July 1st 2016 they performed live for the last time in Lisbon Episode 167 - Vinho do Porto Cássia Rejane Eller (December 10, 1962 – December 29, 2001) was a Brazilian singer and musician. She came to prominence in the early 1990s and performed a mix of rock and MPB. Eller’s most successful album was Acústico MTV – Cássia Eller (2001), selling over 1 million copies. She was ranked as the 18th greatest vocalist and 40th greatest Brazilian musician by Rolling Stone Brasil. On December 29, 2001, Eller died of a heart attack caused by a malformation of her heart at the age of 39. Gerard “Boy” Mendes (born 1952) is a Senegalese musician of Cape Verdean descent. He was born in Dakar, Senegal and was raised in the city’s Cape Verdean diaspora community. As a child, he grew up in a household filled with the sounds of the native morna and coladeira, both Cape Verdian music styles. Later in his life he teamed with other musicians and form Cabo Verde Show, one of the most popular Cape Verdean bands of all time.
