This week’s Podcast Amalia Rodrigues was born on Canada Day - July 1st. If she would be alive, she just had commemorated her 100th birthday! So this show is dedicated to her. I will talk about her early years, singing career, international career, acting career, later years, illness, death and legacy. Known as the ‘Rainha do Fado’ (“Queen of Fado”), Rodrigues was instrumental in popularizing Fado worldwide and traveled internationally throughout her career. Amália remains the best-selling Portuguese artist in history. Zeca Baleiro was born on April 11, 1966 in São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil. He started his career participating in festivals and composing music for children’s theater in the 80s.With his mix of rhythms and diverse musical references, lyrical songs and a sharp verve of humor and irony, the singer and composer was received with enthusiasm by the public and the press when he released his first album, Why Where Will Stephen Fry, in 1997. The band is originally from Porto, and was formed in 1979 by João Grande (voice), Henrique Oliveira (guitar), Rodrigo Freitas (drums), and Rui Taborda (bass).Absorbing the Post-Punk musical influence, New Wave and Ska by the Police, they composed and interpreted original songs sung in English, a situation that would change when in February 1981, in one of their concerts, they were “discovered” by two elements of the Polygram publisher during a concert at Colégio Alemão do Porto, which immediately invites them to record an album. Gerard “Boy” Mendes (born 1952) is a Senegalese musician of Cape Verdean descent. He was born in Dakar, Senegal and was raised in the city’s Cape Verdean diaspora community. As a child, he grew up in a household filled with the sounds of the native morna and coladeira, both Cape Verdian music styles. Later in his life he teamed with other musicians and form Cabo Verde Show, one of the most popular Cape Verdean bands of all time.
