Mount Cain Ski Resort on Vancouver Island has closed for a second time this month on Jan. 23, citing unsafe conditions to operate, due to lack of snow.

A report by Environment Canada (Jan. 1) states Vancouver Island has seen 39 per cent of its normal snowpack levels.

CKTZ reached out to locals about how the news affects them.

“Reduced snowpack affects a lot more than just winter recreation. It is also the flourishing of salmon and lots of other plants and animals that we know and love,” Max Thaysen responded.

Regional Director for Cortes Mark Vonesch also felt the news of Mount Cain prompted climate concerns.

“We can’t just take one case as an extreme example of ‘what’s happening?’” Vonesch said.

“But the trends globally and in BC are that our snow packs are decreasing, our glaciers are decreasing, and our temperatures are rising. And this is a huge concern for everyone who lives here,” he continued.
